PROPERTIES OF BEER AND BEER DRINKING

Glassware/Serving Size

There are several styles of glassware for the various styles of beer around the world. The shape of each style of glass serves different purposes, whether it’s to enhance the aroma, carbonation, or to retain the head. In addition, beers with an ABV greater than 6% are served in a 12 oz. serving.

Temperature

The proper temperature at which to serve beer varies based on style. For example: Wheat beers, American Adjunct Lagers, Hefeweizens, Pilsners, and Light-bodied Lagers are to be served at 35-45°F. Most other styles are to be served between 45°F and 60°F. For this reason, we keep both chilled and room temperature glassware to help us better serve your beer properly.

Aroma

Before you take your first sip, breathe in the aromas of the beer. A good head on the beer is vital for releasing the various scents associated with the style and any special ingredients. Swirl your beer as it warms in the glass to continue experiencing the changing aromas.

Taste

Start by tasting your beer with smaller sips. Certain styles of beer have flavors that are exemplary for the style. See if you can identify them and any additional flavors that may be present at the beginning, as it warms, and in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel

Notice the body of the beer. Make note if it’s light or heavy, watery or creamy, flat or bubbly, etc.
